My boyfriend and I were having a birthday party for my 5-year-old daughter.  He brought his two young kids too because we were going to do magic tricks and the kids loves that.  There were twelve children there and after playing games, opening presents and eating hotdogs, they were ready for the magic show.

Leon and I started putting on the magic show.  It started with me making coins disappear and reappear behind someone’s ear.  After making a stuffed rabbit turn into a frog, it was Leon’s turn to do magic.  He needed three assistants to help with his magic trick so my daughter and his two went up.  He had them turn around with their backs to all of us.  When they turned around, they held signs that read ‘Marry Me Please’.  I screamed yes and everyone started hugging and crying.  I’ll never forget that magic show.

Both John and I had known for years that one day we would be married and spend our lives together. We were invited to a Halloween party and I was going to be a princess, and John was my prince.  I love sewing and said that I would make the costumes. 

On the night of the party, John came over to get ready to go.  What he didn’t know was that I had already told all our friends I was going to propose to John at the party.  The lights were turned low and we were dancing to a slow song when I got down on one knee and asked John to marry me.   My best friend Deb handed me a red heart pillow I had made with a ring for John attached.  When he said yes, I put the ring on his finger.  John still loves to tell our kids this story even after 16 years. 

Fred lives in Kentucky and I live in a small town in Tennessee.  We had a long distance love affair going on until work transferred me to Kentucky a few months ago.  It is wonderful living so close together after all this time. 

One of our favorite places to go is the horse races.  Fred picked me up on my birthday and we went to a very nice restaurant for dinner and then headed for the track.

Fred bought a ticket for a draw there and said it was for me.   At the end of the fourth race, they called my name saying I had won and go to the winners circle.  When Fred and I got there, they handed me a dozen roses.  I was so surprised but it was nothing compared to the next one.  Fred asked me to marry him.  I said yes and the crowd cheered.  

I got a phone call from my boyfriend’s mother saying that Nick had an accident while playing hockey with his friends. They took him to St. Josephs Hospital and she was with him now. Nick was fine other than a broken leg, which they were putting in a cast. I wanted to go to the Hospital but his mom said no. They would be finished with him shortly and I was to meet them at his apartment in an hour.

It is a 45-minute drive from my place so I left immediately. When I got to Nicks, the place was in darkness so I let myself in. I was shocked when he was sitting on the sofa, his leg in a cast with candles burning and a glass of wine for each of us. He asked me to lift his leg and put a cushion under it. When I lifted his leg, the fake cast fell off and written on his leg was would I marry him? I said yes and all of our families that were hiding came out to congratulate us.

I was with a group of my friends and we were walking around the Farmers Market in our small town of Huntsville, Indiana.  We were buying some apples and this great looking guy walked over and asked me if I liked fruit?  I smiled and said yes and he handed me a wax apple and told me it would last forever.  We talked most of the day and then he asked for my phone number.  Allan called and we started dating.

On the 5-year anniversary of when we met, Allan phoned and said to meet him at the Farmers Market.  We met at the apple vendor’s cart and started picking a few apples, when Allan held one up and said that it looked good.  I was shocked because it was another wax apple, which he then pulled apart, took the ring out and asked me to marry him.  That was 45 years ago so a wax apple does last forever.  

In grade two on Valentines Day, a boy with red hair gave me a candy heart.  It said, “will you be mine’, so I did what any six year old girl would do, I ate it.  Over the years, Randy, the boy with the red hair and I were friends and then started dating in High school.  After graduation, we both went to medical school and continued dating.

Our final exams were coming up and Randy and I studied together at his place.  When I got there, he had cooked a roast with all the trimmings.  I was very impressed as I am usually the one cooking.  After the meal, he cleared the table and brought in a heart cake that said, “Will you be mine”?  In the very middle of the cake was a little box made out of Popsicle sticks.  I opened it, and there was a gorgeous ring.  We have been married for over 14 years, so the answer was definitely yes. 

Lisa and I had been dating over 4 years and she was like part of my family.  Everyone loved her and was thrilled when I said that I was going to pop the question at Christmas.  Our family tradition was to open our gifts on Christmas Eve with Lisa and her parents here with us.  My mother and I were talking and we came up with an idea on how I would propose.  Mom knits beautiful sweaters.  She said she would knit me one that said ‘Will You Marry Me Lisa?’ on the back.

On Christmas Eve, we had opened most of the gifts when my mom gave me my gift from her.  It was the special sweater, which I put on and then turned around.  Lisa read the back of the sweater and started to cry. After getting down on one knee, she made me the luckiest man in the world by saying yes.

Ever since I was a young girl, my dream was to have a unique proposal when my Knight in Shining Armor finally asked for my hand in marriage. Glenn and I have been married for almost 9 years and when I think back to the engagement day, I still smile.

For over six months, I had been making monkeys out of wool socks to sell at our church bazaar. Glenn helped me set up the booth with all the monkeys on the day of the sale and then went to look around. Suddenly, people were laughing, pointing, and in walked the biggest monkey I have ever seen. The monkey walked straight to my table and took me by the hand. Leading me to the middle of the room, the monkey then got down on one knee, held out a beautiful ring, and asked me to marry him. I screamed “yes”, pushing his mask back and kissing my love Glenn.

There are a million ways to make a marriage proposal go smoothly. Each person is unique and what pleases one may not please another, so we are left with a vast amount of choices. However, there are a few things that you should not do which is a much shorter list. I will review these things so you do not find yourself in hot water, or worse – not engaged!

We have all seen the movies where the man comes running into the train station and catches his girl just before she gets on board. The train is being held up, there is a huge crowd of people surrounding them, everyone is peering out the windows. Then he confesses his love for her and proposes to her at the train station. Before you get those tears streaming down your face realize that this also can cause embarassment. If she has not told you that she wants a public proposal then do not do it. Instead, sit down with her and make it an intimate, romantic night or event. Most women are going to want that special moment and you only have one shot at it, so do not screw it up.

When eating at that nice restaurant, do not place the ring in the food. You have no idea how many times people eat things without really looking at them. After all, when is the last time you inspected your burger before each bite? she can chip her teeth or even worse, swallow the ring. I do not know about you, but I think getting that ring back is going to be a pain in the butt.

The ballgame may seem great to have your picture up on the megatron, but again, this is a public place. Having you and her on the big screen for all sports fans to see draws alot of attention. If she has not mentioned anything like this before, then you should steer clear.

Avoid proposing at family gatherings. Seriously, unless you know all of the family members there, the intoxication levels are extremely low, and she is very open and close with each family member there, then do not do it. That is a large amount of pressure to drop on her in front of her family, especially if she is not ready to say yes.

Make sure the both of you are ready to take the next step. Everything is bunnies and butterflies during the first few months of a relationship. If you give her a marriage proposal too early the both of you could end up in a very awkward situation down the road. You have your entire life to be together, there is no need to rush things. If you think she will not be around in a few months to ask her, then you should not ask her anyway.

This is a surprise right? Well then do not expect her to just throw the ring on her finger, jump for joy, and say yes right away. Think about what you are asking her. You want her to commit herself to you for the rest of her life. That is a bit more serious than asking to borrow a few CD’s. If she does not say yes, but does not say no, then you are still on a good path. If she needs time, give it to her. The last thing you want to do is pressure someone into saying yes.

Please, for your own sake, really consider the above information. I tell my audience all the time that you only have one real chance at this. If you blow it on the marriage proposal, you cannot take it back. This moment is all about her, so always keep her in mine when you are planning how to propose.
